Many may be more familiar with Cotton’s work from the numerous folk collaborations she has been part of. 18th Day of May, Trimdon Grange Explosion, and The Left Outsides to name a few, have produced some extraordinary albums. Alison’s solo work tends to be more in the experimental range and this release is no different. Made up largely of viola, harmonium drones, and vocal textures the record is both beautiful and haunting Each piece takes on a bit of a different vibe on the same theme. At times it sounds like something that would not be out of place on the soundtrack to the TV show Fargo with its somber tone and singular viola. This really is not a pick-you-up kind of record. It’s something you are going to want to sit and contemplate. Like all of her work though, it hits kind or hard in its softness emotionally.
