Modern stars have quietly released some of the more solid neo-psych albums of the last few years. They are one of those bands that seem to have that, if you know, you know thing going on. Co-released by Little Cloud (USA), Clostridium (EU), and Sister 9 (UK), Termination is the fourth full-length from the Italian quartet. Termination is a brooding, darker shade of psych. Heavy bass lines and funky wah-wah effects pierced by squealing guitar make up the bulk of this record. Some definite influences are here, ranging from Spacemen 3 to newer bands like Alien Mustangs. The drumming stands out here with its heavy, almost tribal feel. The band’s sound is quite dense and lush, as the guitars mesh with the heavy rhythm section. There’s no filler on Modern Stars records, and Termination is no exception. From start to finish, it’s solid and steady, but if you are going to start with two tracks, the slower tunes “Bartleby” and “Be Pure” with those creamy JAMC vibes are a good place to start.
