Don’t let the promises of Krautrock bliss fool you on this one. Unless you are talking about the earliest of releases from the likes of Tangerine Dream or Klaus Schulze this one is pure drone bliss. No sequencer rhythms or reliance on pure noise explorations here. It would seem terms like krautrock are thrown around with so much ease these days it really doesn’t do works like this justice. There are two long sides with one track from each artist on a beautiful picture disc on this release. Chino Burga’s side is a long guitar-based drone, heavy on the reverb and delays that pulse in and out as layers come and go. Anunnaki’s offering trends closer to the early krautrock theme. Less reliant on the drones, lighter keys drive the pace as basslines come and go and various sounds ebb and flow to create a meditative state. Eventually, the piece becomes a bit more ominous with scratchy processed guitars and subtle bass oscillations. If I were to draw my own comparison it might be to the works of Loscil. This one fits in quite nicely with my Sunday morning drone sessions. Unlike most splits, these two pieces really compliment each other quite nicely to present a coherent listen.
