This one is even tougher for me than the Spiritualized record. I feel like I’m an outlier on this one. I loved the early releases. The extended tunes, the chaos, the lack of definition and the struggle to pull out the detail from the mix as well as the in-song repetition were all part of the experience. With the last Loop release and Sonancy, we have shorter, more well-defined “songs”. I think it’s the clearer vocals that throw me the most. For me, it’s like a whole different band. This is ok and part of any band maturing, but it doesn’t mean it will have the same impact on all fans. I have a feeling this record will have a more substantial impact at live shows. I actually like the record. The tracks “Supra” and “Aurora” are killer as is the tribal feel of “Isochrone” but I find most of the record a bit repetitive track to track rather than repetitive within the tracks like days of old. If anything it’s made me pull out the older records to crank “The Nail Will Burn”. Don’t even get me started on the issues with the “purple” vinyl. This one still has a chance to grow on me a bit. Even doing this review I am finding more here than in the last month or so. So perhaps this one may receive a later in the year edit if it’s required.
