Coming soon from Cardinal Fuzz and Feeding Tube is a new collaboration from Dead Sea Apes, Adam Stone, and Black Tempest. A data transfer driven operation due to Covid restrictions, Dataland is a highly electronic oriented affair. Electronic loops and arpeggiations set the tone while guitar and percussion punctuate and accentuate the dystopian data-driven world we live in. Adam Stones vocals ponder this dystopian world with bleak spoken words.
The album leads off with “Lost Hours”, a somewhat 80’s Tangerine Dream influenced sequencer rhythm and synth drums with Adam Stone providing some bleak spoken word. “Formica Desk” follows with some more aggressive electronica and fuzzed guitar with more of the bleak lyrics. “Time To Eat Again” follows along the same vein but with a bit more song structure and more mainstream sound. “Shop Soiled” takes us into Dub land and recalls some of the earlier Public Image Work. “Dataland” picks up where “Lost hours” left us. “Empty Sheets” closes things out with a dark droning fuzz infused ode to a corporation run dystopian society.
Dataland continues the trend of Covid inspired darkness that we saw all through 2020 from numerous bands. Bleak themes and sounds great for late-night play. You never know what you might get when some of these outfits get together on collaborations but the result here is a cohesive work that communicates its intentions quite well.
