Powered by saxophone player Søren Skov, Mythic Sunship venture into the void somewhere between spaced out Jazz and modern psych music. I’m not a Jazz lover by any means but this release will probably get me as close as I’ll ever get to enjoying some of the more traditional Jazz freakouts which usually turn my ears right off. There is enough other stuff going on here to compliment the purely abstract. Powering through 5 long tracks this release documents one of three shows at the Roadburn festival in 2019.

If you are a fan of the Myrrors you will be right at home with the first track “Awakening”. A long intro with massive Sax flourishes builds into a heavy and repetitive trance inducing freakout of epic proportions. Elevation is much more methodical in its approach with it’s heavy drumming and bassline layered with more powerful Sax playing. Way Ahead starts of with a playful guitar noodling before diving into a faster paced guitar centric piece. Olympia slows things down a bit with guitar work reminiscent of Garcia Peoples  clocks  in at 12 minutes of beautiful noise. Changing Shapes closes with the epic Ophidian Rising culminating at in a phrenetic conclusion to an outstanding album. I can’t imagine Mythic Sunship is for everyone but I’m converted. I can only hope I get to se them perform live if this is the type of show they put on.
