Anyone who knows me knows of my love for Andrew Chalk’s music, which certainly includes when he is paired with the also excellent Timo Van Luijk as Elodie. Clarté Déserte is Elodie at it’s pastoral best. Gentle background drones punctuated with delicate piano and subtle guitar. This has a bit more of a “light jazz” approach, as the piano is a bit more dominant than usual. I can’t recall an Elodie release with drones so far in the background, but that creates a very enjoyable listen while focusing on those subtleties. The percussive elements are still present, though also much more subdued, as are some wind instruments and keys. The ten pieces on this release are shorter than usual and are more short portraits or vignettes as if walking through a museum looking at paintings. This is an excellent addition to the Sunday morning coffee listening repertoire.
