Mythic Sunship is another example of a jazz influemced psych jam outfit that has recently taken a bit harder approach, especially on their last release Wildfire. Light/Flux brings things back into focus a bit. From the opening acoustic riffs on “Aurora” you know things are going to be a bit different. Returning a bit to their jazz influenced roots we get plenty of sax mixed in with the free form guitarwork creating a much more dense but yet more approachable sound. This is the Mythic Sunship I fell in love with. “Blood Moon” takes on a more bluesy dark approach. Equinox has us rolling down the road at high speed towards oblivion. “Decomposition” is the longest track clocking in at 12 Minutes and takes us on an extended journey through time and space through its pace changes and instrumentation. The track alone is worth the price of admission. “Tempest” adds in some blasts from trumpets that i would normally dismiss as random jazz assaults on the ears but yet it fits in nicely here with the guitar craziness. “First Frost closes things out with a nice bass groove and some twangy guitars. This is a top notch Mythic Sunship release and I’m surprised its not creating as much buzz as some earlier stuff like Upheaval and Another Shape…but it’s right up there with their best.
