Worst Bassist records breaks the mold with this 4-way split. Im not normally in favor of split releases. The tracks usually have nothing to do with each other and its just a reason to get two sets of fans to buy something. But here we get 4 space rock outfits doing what they do best, long format jams with each band at the top of their game. One side each from Kungens Män, Electric Moon, Elon Musk and Kanaan. Elon Musk kicks things off with what sounds like an extended New Order style intro before diving into the jam, a slow methodical keyboard centric piece before it it explodes into chaos about fifteen minutes in. At 22 minutes the track is an albums worth of quality jams. Side two is the shortest track of the release with Electric Moon’s “Duality” clocking in at a mere 15 minutes plus. Heavy on the tremolo its like a strobe light for the ears. As always the bass is busy boring a hole into your brain. Last time I saw Electric Moon there were these two guys banging their long ass hair so hard you could hear it hitting the stage. They would love this tune. So keeping with a theme for myself, this record is like a journey of my Euro adventure earlier in the year where i saw all but Elon Musk. The third track features a long and brilliantly plodding piece by Kungens Män which focuses a bit more on their heavier side without the prominent sax and jazz influences but yet fitting in nicely with the other tracks presented here lots of spacey guitar work rising above the dirge. The album closes with Kanaan, who have slowly but surely progressed in their heaviness, however this piece dials back the heaviness a bit for a more plodding head bobbing pace to fit with the rest of the album nicely.
I honestly don’t know if you could put together a better 4 band split. Chances are if your a fan of any of these bands you like all of them and each track is so long its essentially like getting 4 lps worth of material the way we have been getting shortchanged on album lengths these days. This one will be on my end of year list which would normally be impossible but this grouping of tracks is very well curated and with a supposed volume 2 it would be hard to out do this collection of tracks.
