Menk, from St Petersburg, Russia is a psych collaboration that will not be pigeon-holed in any one era. Rooted in the classic sounds of the 60’s yet also throwing off some serious 90s Madchester vibes. Heavy use of repeat percussion effects to create that great oscillation effect with the subtle soft echoed vocals, reversed effects ala Stone Roses, and at times almost venturing into improvisation. On a track like “Ten'” they pick up the pace a bit which has more of a frantic post-punk feel. “Holod Kamney” takes you back in time while the closing track “Pustoda” is more like experimentation in distortion and feedback paired with an acoustic guitar. The standout track for me is the extended “Son” 9 minutes of solid bass-paced guitar improv. You even get a bit of slide guitar on “Po Mokrim Krysham” for an almost Hawaiian feel There is some trimming of tracks on the LP due to time constraints though I can’t be sure where because of no run time listings. The Cdr and digital copies are full lengths. An outstanding record that covers a ton of ground.
