Trigona is a one-man act from Ipswich, Queensland in Australia emanating from the mind of Rob Shiels. The music which is recorded in Shiels’ home studio combines elements of post punk, psych, and motorik rhythms. The LP is a vinyl release of the original 2021 EP with an extra track. This is a four-way release between The Weird Beard (UK), Echodelick (USA), Wort Bassist (EU) and Ramble Records (AU).

Primarily guitar-driven, the instrumental music keeps things pretty straightforward with precision drumming and steady bass grooves. The LP leads off with “Von Graf” with percussion and bassline reminiscent of Joy Division’s Transmission. layered on top with a jammy echo-laden guitar riff. “Nudler” follows with some extra fuzz before leading into a slight change of pace on “Rosatom”, which is a bit more shoegaze in its approach bringing together a more layered sound. “Shita Ue” kicks off with a driving bassline before giving way to its motorik beat and basic guitar leads. “Monk” continues in much the same manner before heading into “Via Egnatia” which slows things down with a darker pace and more effects-laden guitar work through its eight minutes.

A solid record. It’s not going to blow you away with overly technical playing, jazzy riffs, electronics, or any kind of fanciness but what it will do is entertain you with solid tracks all the way through. The grooves will keep you moving and there is something about the simplicity here that is rather elegant and entertaining. Looking forward to hearing more from Trigona.
