I have been following Black Holes Are Cannibals(BHAC) since their first cassette release on Infinity Mirror Records (now Entoptic Audio) and I have loved every minute of it. The brainchild of Chris Jude Watson, BHAC operates as a loose collective of like minded individuals creating improvisational experimental droning soundscapes. Surfacer is their first release outside of their usual self made cassettes and the first to make it to a larger vinyl format with distribution. For fans of long droning pieces with a solid but paced groove and plenty of effects this is a monster release. Pounding drums and steady basslines are punctuated by squealing guitars, whirlwind electronics effects, moaning quasi vocals resembling throat singing, and additional percussion to create a solid wall of sound. As I had mentioned in a Facebook post, this really recalls a bit of early Cosmic Dead from the Exalted King era. The relentless dirge continues for 20 minutes on each side. This is dark stuff and yet quite beautiful.
Surfacer was released as a collab between The Acid Test Recordings & Little Cloud Records (USA) you can also pick up copies at Cardinal Fuzz in the UK
