Papir has never been a band that shies away from transformation and they have morphed their sound again on 7. Borrowing heavily from both post and prog rock Papir has gone light on the complexity and focused more on tonality with beautiful results. The epic album opener “7.1” clocks in at 19 minutes over three parts beginning very much in post-rock mode with the crystal clear guitar tones, epic drumming, and sweeping electronics. Midway through the opener things slow down and we enter a more experimental phase with no percussion, heavy electronics, and more focus on bass atmospherics before adding some guitar noodling to close things out. “7.2” ventures into more of a prog-post rock hybrid mode with the precision drumming layered with lighter keys and more complex guitar work. “7.3” is more of a sonic adventure, heavy on ambient textures, subtle guitar tones, and effects that build through its eight minutes. The album closes with “7.4” with its heavy uses of toms and more atmospheric tones for a slightly darker feel before layering in the keyboards. This release really borrows a lot of the best of numerous genres to create an amazing mindset and listening experience. Sit back with a quality sipping-beverage or your chemical relaxation preference and just enjoy. You aren’t going to be dancing but you will be smiling.
