The latest release from Canadian artist Loscil aka Scott Morgan is somewhat of a departure from his earlier works and continues the journey he has been on in his last few releases. Sourced from a three minute composition from a 22 piece Budapest orchestra and cut to a 7″ lathe. The Lathe then was reportedly scratched, sampled and morphed into this stunning release. I have been listening to Loscil quite a bit as my official falling asleep music for years. I had discovered his work as the soundtrack to a meditative phone game I used to play quite a bit called Osmos. His music as always seemed to lie somewhere between ambient and more technical oriented glitchy percussive sounds interspersed. You still get some of that here on tracks like “Lumina” but it’s far closer to ambient then earlier work but yet undoubtedly still Loscil. Dark and foreboding but not quite venturing into the Dark Ambient realm the pieces on Clara paint a picture of a beautiful but barren landscape. The sampling of the orchestra creates a more realistic atmosphere from previous works, as it should. I could definitely picture this as a soundtrack. If you are a Loscil fan your going to love this and if for some reason you have not been a fan of his work you may find this more appealing than earlier work. It’s been getting a ton of late night run on my sleeping (or can’t sleeping) headphones.
