Coming soon from Cardinal Fuzz Records (Europe) and Little Cloud Records (USA) is the latest and 5th release from Sweden’s The Janitors. If you like dark this one is for you, right down to the final track “Isolation”, a haunting and darkened cover of the classic Joy Division track. Originally going into the studio to record their new LP before Corona hit they settled into their own studio instead and produced the epic cover tune and decided to take a different route for the new LP. They agreed on some rigid rules for recording new songs, in the same manner, using 1 night of recording and 1 week of mixing. While admitting that this is their least “worked through” art it has produced some of their best songs, mistakes and all. “Through the Storm Into Chaos” is an epic seven-minute dirge that grinds its way with dark pounding drums deep vocals and slowly screaming guitars. The pace picks up a bit with “High On God”, kind of like Spacemen 3’s “Revolution” on quaaludes. “Indifferent State” follows with another dirge-like pace as it creeps through it paces augments with some rather upbeat sounding chime-like sounds peaking out of the darkness. “Thing is Rising” is a bit more menacing with a more gravelly voice and swinging beat. “The Mind Is A Terrible Thing” picks up the pace again as it’s “wall of sound” works its way through seven-plus minutes before leading into the before mentioned epic cover track. A very different direction for the band but it’s something I definitely like and I’m already going back through some of the back catalogs to give their stuff another listen and finding that maybe it’s not as far off as I first thought.
