I had the privilege of seeing Elkhorn perform twice last year in Milwaukee at ACME Records and at their show during Milwaukee Psych Fest. At the time, I remember thinking that it was all a bit too mellow for me. Of course, that’s a bit of a ridiculous statement for someone that listens to so much drone music but perhaps I was just in the mood for something a bit more raucous. Elkhorn is an improvisational guitar duo of Jesse Shepard on 12 String Acoustic and Drew Gardiner on Electric augmented by their friend Turner Williams for these two extended pieces. Simply put these two pieces are sublime. long-form 12 string jams augmented by some distant fuzz and Eastern instrumentation give this some of that 70’s German experimentation layered on top of what could be described as folk style noodling. In my world, this is classic Sunday Morning coffee music that goes right next to the usual cosmic jamming that is the norm.
