I’ll be honest, I don’t even know where to start with this release. For sure this is going to be a challenging listen for many and will push your boundaries to the brink. The inaugural release for OZO is pretty much a full on frontal free jazz alto sax attack on the senses and I mean that in the most glorious way. Free Jazz isn’t my thing but there is enough here to keep me listening..From the opening notes of the first track “Lifeship” we are treated to a blistering alto sax freak-out of epic proportions. If you thought that was aggressive wait until the 13 minute second track “Saturn”. Faster and more free than “Lifeship” this one kicks it up a few notches. This really borders on the edge of complete chaos with the sax and frantic drums tearing away at your senses.
Side two begins with another 10+ minute song Nuclear Fuel is based in much more familiar territory with a heavier more psych feel to it with elements of Krautrock mixed in for good measure but retaining much of the free jazz elements from side one. “Slide Way and “Centuries” close out the record as two shorter pieces but again represent the total chaos in a more easily fashion. It’s a hard listen and I am going to have to give this a few more runs to see if it breaks me. The sound on this record is absolutely fantastic and you will certainly get your ears worth on the Riot Season release.
