Feral Child’s latest release from the excellent ambient\kosmische\drone outfit Studio Kosmische is a new exploration for the wordless film Lucifer Rising. The “soundtrack” is comprised of snippets from previous releases that have been altered in numerous ways to combine as a new whole piece. I cannot speak to how it works with the film, so I can only comment on the work as a singular musical entity. “Lucifer Rising” wanders in a kind of drifting state, or perhaps I should say it endlessly drifts throughout its 28-minute run. The work creates a dark and peaceful atmosphere out of various drones and electronics without any true beats or rhythms except for some brief tribal drum interludes at various points. Sporadic percussive elements dot the landscape, as do various electronic bleeps and bloops conjuring up visions of jungle exploration or perhaps deep caverns. I enjoy the way there is darkness without descending completely into the realm of dark ambient. Still, the more interesting parts are the quiet breaks that create a kind of tension of exploration with the possibility of a sudden jarring conclusion always just around the corner. This release really works for me and should play well for some great late-night listening. One of the better droning/ambient records this year.
