Last review for a month (I think), while I take an extended vacation. New split release from Kombynat Robotron and DUNDDW released by Spinda Records and Sunhair Music. While I am not familiar with DUNDDW, Kombynat Robotron is a staple around here. This is perhaps Kombynat’s most straightforward rock record yet. Heavy walking basslines, steady motorik rhythms, and jammy guitars set this one apart from previous efforts, which were a bit more spacey in the past. Each of the two Kombynat tacks on this one fall into the same vein with track two, “Delta” perhaps taking the edge off ever so slightly, but without question, this is a bit less spacey and experimental than past works in favor of a more standard rock approach. The pace is quick and deliberate, which they have done plenty of, but the production here is much cleaner, and much of the live feel is absent, unlike past recordings. The DUNDDW side is a bit harder to pinpoint. At 22 Minutes in length “VIII” is certainly a long player that starts off slow and then picks up the pace with some rapid bass playing, jangling guitars over dark, ominous rhythms. I’m not a math rock guy, but at times this is what I picture it to be in my mind. It’s a bit technical, is what I’m trying to say. There are also some electronics and effects that come into play as the piece ebbs and flows, picks up speed, and then settles down to start over. My experimental side says this is the standout track but the rocker in me is also digging the two Kombynat tracks as well, so take your pick. I’m going to have to find out what else these DUNDDW guys have going on.
Released by Spinda Records also available from Echodelick Records and sold out from The Weird Beard
