If you are a fan of drifting drones, pads and oscillations that eventually give way to pounding rhythms then this one is going to be right up your alley. Fred Laird and Mike Vest team up with Martin Ash on the bands third full length release. It all starts off simple enough. For the first 5 minutes you are meditating away with the blissful pads and jazzy keyboards mingling about until you are left with the viola drone when all of a sudden the distortion of the guitars primal drumming and pounding bassline kick in and set you upright. The next ten minutes are a repetitive rhythm section with a wall of noise that washes in and out amidst the squeals of distortion. The second track, on side two, “Twilight Chorus” picks up a bit where “Sound of Desolation” left off with a similar rhythm but much more subdued. focusing a bit more on keys and effects which fade in and out slowly building up the sound as the drumming gets a bit more involved before the piece winds down at the end with the churchy organ. Overall the record has a bit of a cinematic feel to it but that’s probably just a personal thing I do with some records where I picture them as a soundtrack, in this case to a night out on the town with a bit of that Spacemen 3 “Big City” feel from The Simpsons if you have ever seen it. This definitely has a great groove going on both sides but do not be lulled into thinking this is going to be a pastoral listen based on the first 5 minutes. This one will having you moving
