By now the story of the 2015 performance is legendary. With The Heads performing as part of a residency at the 2015 Roadburn festival a Kandodo performance would make sense and with Loop’s Robert Hampson also being in attendance, having him join Simon Price as well as Wayne and Hugo of The Heads seemed like a good idea. Over the course of a couple days of rehearsals and the actual performance we get the four tracks (or is it 10) on this stellar 2LP set. The first record is the rehearsal sessions while the second is the performance. “Kandy Rock Mountain/Dawn Harmonix” kicks off side one with a slow burner of a piece. Somewhat Can influenced (think “Mushroom”) a simple two note bassline piece with distorted guitars layered with loads of effects and a simple drum rhythms fading into more of a JAMC inspired tune somewhat resembling the “On The Wall”. Side two Gives us “Kandl/Laud Hyena/ Swim Into The Sun” Kandl has a quicker pace and touch of Eastern influence, Laud Hyena is a bit of a beautiful mess while “Swim Into The Sun” would appeal to fans of the Spacemen 3’s “Revolution”. Sides 3 and 4 are basically the same tunes with more polish and flash for the performance and a different running order. It’s interesting to see how the pieces evolved over just a couple days together. Overall this is a great listen but I can’t help thinking how much better it would have been to be there. You are going to want to crank this up and immerse yourself in the fuzz. It’s a different experience than Kandodo 3. It’s more raw and lacks some of the lighter moments but then again it’s live and live rehearsals so no polish. Limited to 500 copies on heavy vinyl with a nice stenciled sleeve with lenticular effects.
