It’s post-rock day here at the Drone and we continue with another excellent release from Mogwai. This one has been out for a while and it has been on my playlist for an extensive run. It’s been a rough go between myself and Mogwai over the years as I have struggled with the output since Rock Action. There’s always a track or two on each release to keep me going but then the rest is just kind of filler. I especially struggled with the vocals and vocoding as it just didn’t seem like Mogwai to me. “As The Love Continues” in many ways brings me full circle and brings me to a better appreciation for their later work including their soundtracks. I actually like Stuart’s singing and the shorter songs have found a new appreciation for myself. It really all clicked for me when I tuned into the live broadcast of the album release. And yes I have played “Ritchie Sacramento” about 1000 times. If there is a bit of criticism here, there’s a bit of noise on this release that reminds me a bit of the last couple of Low albums. I’m not sure it appeals to me. Some standout tracks here are the aforementioned “Ritchie Sacramento”, “Pat Stains” which fits into that traditional Mogwai sound, and “Ceiling Granny” is a real banger. The album closes with “It’s What I Want to Do, Mum” which is about 7 minutes shy of being one of those all-time Mogwai classic show closers. Overall a very solid effort that brings together all phases of the Mogwai sound. Like the Mono review before it, Mogwai will also be in town in the future but man what is it with these shows all being 6 months away?
