When we last encountered White Canyon & The Fifth Dimension they were busy taking third place in our rundown of the top 25 LP’s of 2020 with their self-titled release on Necio Records. The band returns with their sophomore effort, again on Necio Records, for sale on Bandcamp Friday, April 2nd. Where their first LP primarily channeled the spirits of The Blank Angels, Spectral Illusions branches out a bit into some newer territories.
The LP kicks off with the title track and some twangy western guitar, Doors-like keys, and some echo-drenched dueling vocals. “Seven Kingdoms” follows along the same vein with a slightly more doom-oriented sound. “Electric Ghost” takes things in a far more funky direction with maybe a Factory influence and a dark dance beat. “Sensitive Fate” slows things down to a crawl with the beautiful vocals and twangy melancholy guitar. The epic “Endless Sea” follows with 8 minutes of head nodding perfection punctuated with the driving rhythm section. “Look Up The Sky” is a short classic psych-influenced piece with dreamy vocals and flute layered over the jangly guitar. The LP closes out with “Oroboros” another epic track with its driving drum line and fuzzed-out guitar, at times sounding a bit like Floyd meets Sabbath.
Long story short don’t pass on this one. Word is their first LP will be getting a repress so grab that one as well. Nobody should be sleeping on these guys by now. Another top LP from White Canyon & The Fifth Dimension.
