Coming soon from Up In Her Room records is the new release from Snakes Don’t Belong in Alaska, “Navegando Al Paraiso.” The new record sees the band exploring darker textures and ambiance alongside some of the usual fuzz we are accustomed to, such as the louder fuzz-driven approach of their last effort, “Sounds Of A Forming Planet.” “Navegando al Paraiso” starts with a droney space tune, “Fire Breath of Paradise.” Propelled by heavy delay on the guitar and a pulsating heartbeat of a rhythm, the track sounds as if it was serving as an opening track to a movie soundtrack. “Eternal Sunday” is a bit more pastoral to start with field recordings of water and birds lying underneath the gentle guitar playing before slowly building up to a more fully realized piece that breaks out a bit of the fuzz for a nice slow space jam led by the dark and heavy bass runs. “The Worship Of The Angry Sky Gods,” a relatively short piece at under 5 minutes, kicks off with some classic 60s psych organ, trumpet, and a slow bassline to accompany the guitar noodling for a spacey, jazzy feel. The album closes with the lengthy (sixteen minutes) “My Void Is Full Of Colour.” The track starts beautifully with some keyboards and a gentle echo-laden guitar and phasing before building up to full space rock mode, eventually broken up with a scientific narration interspersed with heavy jams. I like the change of pace by the band on this release. You feel a sense of adventure from the journey these tunes lead you through. The songs have a natural flow to them. A very satisfying listen.
