Cosmic space jammers Studio Kosmische break into some new territory on their latest release on Dreamlord Recordings. Dom Keen and Jonathan Parkes return with their latest installment of ambient blended with classic Kosmische sounds of the seventies. This time however they have added some jazz and percussion elements to the usual focus on ambiance and space. The result is a much more complex sound. The album is divided up into two long tracks. The first side consists of the twenty-minute “The Rite Of Saturn”, which starts off with some tribal beats with some classic light rhythm guitar strumming as the electronic buzz in and out. You really get the full effect with headphones on as the is quite a bit of stereo separation between the guitars and bass. As we approach the seven-minute mark we drop off the deep end into experimentation land. Cymbals pads and cosmic effects combine as if we are exploring the deep blackness of space and we don’t return until about the fifteen-minute mark. By the end, we even get some guest saxophone work added to the mix.

Side two consists of the title track and kicks off much in the same manner with some funky rhythm augmented by some experimental percussive electronics. It’s a bit lighter and less deep hit of space than side one but it does however make another excursion about ten minutes in adding some acoustic guitar which in some ways takes us to the blackness of the desert rather than the cosmos. While I have enjoyed all of the Studio Kosmische releases immensely, this one really takes it to another level. It’s far more adventurous. and brings in several new elements. Highly recommended.
