Flavor Crystals and The Telescopes are collaborating again on Under The Trees which is the soundtrack to a Danish film that was never made. The follow up to the excellent first LP Acetate Parade finds the two bands, as well as a number of additional collaborators, treading on dark grounds. Heavy plodding baselines with dark scrapes and industrial sounds layered with dark but airy vocals make up a majority of this release. Some really nice tracks here like “Choplifter” with its heavy use of tremolo, electronics and effects to create a brooding atmosphere. “Green Triangles” with its heavy bass riff picks up the pace a bit with an almost PIL like vibe. The album excels with the songs that have a more pronounced song structure like the title track and the afore mentioned “Green Triangle”. The more experimental and slower tracks tracks provide a dark atmosphere that really holds your attention despite being a bit off the path. There’s alot going on with this album. It succeeds at pulling together many different influences on each track combining elements of shoegaze, psych, industrial and a touch of gothy dance music. This collaboration is really onto something. I wouldn’t mind seeing some performances of this material in the future.
