The always excellent core of Elkhorn is Drew Gardner on Electric guitar and Jesse Sheppard on acoustic duties. Here they are aided by two drummers in Ian McColm and Nate Scheible. Elkhorns sound is usually quite consistent but Distances starts off with “Train” which is a real burner. A kind of swampy bluesy piece that catches you off guard. From there we move on to more standard Elkhorn fair like the jam band style on “Wilderness”. “1919” continues in a similar style with some excellent drumming to really fill out the sound. The album closes with “Distances” taking up the full side B, the extended jam track really brings together all the elements of side one. The sound on this record is crystal clear and you can really heare all the details of both the electric and acoustic guitars but the added emphasis on the percussion is what really ties this record together and is their most full sounding effort to date.
